About this deal

Removing the drip tray reveals a big round dial which, when turned, results in wheels popping out of the base. This doesn't mean you can't use single origins, of course, I'd just recommend finding your feet with blends before you start trying single origins. You also get a weighty-feeling 58mm portafilter (Sage’s cheaper models use smaller 54mm ones) which means you can swap in a 58mm portafilter from any number of professional-class machines. It makes delightful espresso shots, and the Pannarello-style steam wand produces silky smooth milk foam. If you want a coffee machine that will make you a latte with the press of a single button, the Oracle isn’t for you.

Yes it’s bloody expensive and yes it is huge, but it’s effortless to use and it produces an exquisite extraction time after time. However, you need to be more careful about tamping the grounds to achieve the crema you’ll get more or less as standard when using beans. Automated, touch screen operation simplifies how to make your favourite coffees in three easy steps - grind, brew, and milk. The Oracle Touch is similar to the original The Oracle, with automated grinding, dosing, and tamping, as well as automated milk texturing. I first wrote my Sage Oracle review several years ago when Sage Appliances very kindly sent the Sage Oracle to me on loan for a couple of weeks. The drip tray spans the width of the machine and slots home with a firm thunk and can handle a surprisingly large amount of water before the warning sign floats upwards and requests you empty it. The Oracle Touch uses 22 grams of fresh ground coffee each time, creating a double shot as standard. kilos, this coffee maker is a real beast compared to the compact Bambino Plus, which is a smaller model from Sage.

You need to grind a precise amount of coffee beans to an optimal fineness; tamp that coffee down into the machine’s portafilter with a consistent, even pressure; and ensure enough water passes through those coffee grounds at the optimum rate to draw all the desired flavours into the cup. You’re left to fine tune aspects, and slot in the wand, stopping it from being a control-free bean-to-cup system. As it’s at the rear of the machine, most kitchen layouts will require you to spin the machine around 90 degrees to access it. Getting the ratio of ground coffee to brewed coffee is easiest with a small set of digital scales – as a ballpark figure, you should generally aim for a ratio of grams of espresso in the cup to ground coffee of around 2:1), but we managed to get very drinkable results just by eyeballing the process and using familiar espresso cups. With six preset coffee styles at your fingertip and up to eight customisable settings, this machine makes consistently excellent espressos. This is because, unlike machines such as the Philips Saeco HD8751, the grinding and brewing processes don’t take place in a single unit. That is, pouring latte art is not easy, and it never will be – in fact, it's taken me years to learn to pour latte art, and I'm still not amazing at it. For example, the DeLonghi Magnifica ESAM3300 costs significantly less than the Oracle and lets you brew everything from an espresso to a latte. Ultimately if we're asking if the Oracle is worth it, meaning is it worth spending the additional money on vs a more affordable coffee machine, then we have to focus on cup quality.

One of the most common issues I see with people using the Oracle and similar machines is shot-to-shot consistency. There’s plenty of adjustment range on the grinder control, so while it defaults to a setting of 30, you can dial it down lower (finer) if the coffee is coming through too quickly or raise it as high as 45 if it’s coming through too slowly. In fact for most brands, if you take the cheapest model in the range to pieces, and then do the same with one of the more flagship models in their range, you'll probably find that where it really matters (burrs, brewing unit) they're more or less identical, and what you've dropped the additional money on is not reflected in cup quality. It takes a lot of practice, my son is a pro barista, I actually taught him to pour latte art at a fairly young age, but how quickly he came on with his latte art skills once he started working as a barista, just goes to show that practice makes perfect. Some commercial machines have buttons for both, These change the volume that comes out not the grind. And if you choose to, it offers you the convenience of one-touch brewing without compromising on the quality of the coffee. This sits below the grinder; the dial on the left side of the Oracle controls how fine or coarse the grind is. A usual range of ratio is anything between 2 and maybe a touch over 3, But another option at any of them is to cut the shot time significantly. However, you’ll have to dump the used grounds into the knock bin after every brew, and give it a wipe with a cloth. Not all brands were quite that approachable, in fact, some of the other big brands didn't get back to me at all, not that I'm surprised, as they can't have known whether they'd be wasting their time with me, and to be completely honest, at that time I didn't know if they would be either ;-), at that time I didn't know that what was a little hobby would literally take over my life and become my new career!
