About this deal

There are those engaged in furthering the influence of Fascism, and there are those engaged in countering that, and secrecies, and plots, are all around. Christmas season has come and Rory Clements has brought me again several hours of joy reading Corpus, the first book of his new saga. His new character Professor Wilde, a scholar specialized in Tudor England himself nicely fills the gap left by the Bard’s brother in Clements’ former saga. T. Anderson Madeleine Cook Maisie Chan Malcolm Sawyer Manda Scott Mandy Archer Manjeet Mann Manjit Thapp Marc Randolph Marcus Sedgwick Margaret Kirk Margo N. Despite moving his setting forward 400 years, he cannot quite sever his connection to those great spymasters Walsingham and Cecil, whose dedication and ruthlessness helped save Britain from religiously-inspired Spanish expansionism.

Wilde is a truly brilliant character who is no wannabe hero just a determined, level headed problem solver when the need demands, which will come in particularly handy in the minefield of political riddles he’s stumbled into. He hasn’t been to war, doesn’t side in political debates, avoids the ‘traditions’ of the college at all costs, and he’s one of the few people whose morals remain intact. I find the interwar period fascinating anyway though it tends to be overshadowed by the Second World War and post-war eras. It is an ideal setting for the conspiracies and crimes that come to light during the course of the story, for if anywhere exemplified the polarisation of politics in Britain during the 1930s, it was here.Hansen Gill Hasson Gill Lewis Ginny Myers Sain Giovanni Tesio Glenn Elliott Graeme Guthrie Graeme Wood Graham Jones Guy Gunaratne Guy Standing H. The thing I hadn't appreciated before reading this is that the pre-war academic world is as split and turbulent as mainland Europe itself. L. The Nazis have invaded Czechoslovakia, in Germany Jewish persecution is widespread and, closer to home, the IRA has embarked on a bombing campaign. When a friend of Lydia’s dies in mysterious circumstances, Wilde is drawn into trying to help her find out what has happened – and a real twisty, turny, wheels within wheels, where does anyone’s real allegiance lie tale begins to play out. Corpus is a standout historical novel and spy thriller by an author who can turn his hand to any historical period he chooses.May have some underlining and highlighting of text and some writing in the margins, but there are no missing pages or anything else that would compromise the readability or legibility of the text.
